It's MTV's World Cup of Rock! The World Cup is the greatest sporting event on the planet, a super-sized stage where legends are born with every strike of the ball, where infamy is just a moment away and where the dreams of millions live or die by the minute. That's why, in the spirit of the 2010 MTV Musical March Madness competition, we've created "The World Cup (Of Rock)," a FIFA-style tournament that takes 16 of the biggest nations — rock-wise (sorry Algeria) — and pits them against one another to determine just which is the most rockingly awesome. Heavyweights like the U.S.A., England, France and Germany are all here, but so are a handful of surprisingly strong sleeper countries. As the Cup progresses, we'll be unveiling the match-ups, and it's up to you to vote your favorites through. In the end, only one nation will be left standing: the world champion of rock.
The first round is in the books, which means that our field of 16 of the rockingest nations in the 2010 FIFA World Cup is down to a list of eight. The balance in the field is pretty incredible, as there are two teams from North America, one from South America, two from Asia, two from Europe and Australia. In our first match-up, the overall top vote-getter squares off against a squad that just slid its way into the second round. But it's a new day and a new poll, which means that anything is possible.
Germany vs. Italy
The Tokio Hotel-led Germans tore through the competition in the first round, racking up huge numbers of votes on their way to an unbeaten streak. Italy managed to finish in second place in Group D with a razor-thin victory over Denmark in the waning hours of the first round. Their metal-influenced attack has proved to be resilient, but can they top the surging Germans? Only you can decide!
