Tokio Hotel Rocks MTV World Stage Live 2010

Taking their sound overseas, the members of Tokio Hotel were among the participants in the MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia music event in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on Saturday (July 31).
With Bill Kaulitz, Tom Kaulitz, Gustav Schaefer and Georg Listing all on-hand at the Sunway Lagoon Resort Surf Beach venue, the quartet took part in a press conference before taking the stage for a smokin’ set including Noise, Automatic, Dogs Unleashed and Forever Now.
Chatting with press before their turn onstage, MTV asked the group what fans could expect from the show, to which Bill replied, “What we did on this record is that we tried some new instruments, the guys are playing keyboards, and they are playing piano for the first time, because in general, Tom is only playing the guitar, but he’s also really talented when it comes to the piano, so we went with a new record to try new stuff on stage as well.”
Also asked if there are ever any nerves before performing to packed crowds, the Tokio Hotel frontman answered, “Yes, we do. But when you play a tour for like 3 months or something…with the large shows when it’s the same every night, it’s not that bad, you get used to it. We are always nervous when it’s just the one show, just the one possibility, and it’s always exciting. I think it’s a normal thing to be nervous.”

Tokio Hotel
Tokio Hotel
Interview and Text: Madeleine Chong

Chart-topping singles, platinum-selling albums, electrifying gigs, and a slew of awards – these are the hallmarks of the Tokio Hotel empire. Waking in different hotels every few weeks and being surrounded by hordes of devoted fans showing up at every turn have become staples for the Tokio Hotel boys, and the Kaulitz twins haven’t even turned 21 yet.
With their irresistibly catchy glam rock sound, the band certainly knows how to “human connect to human,” captivating not just Europe, but the rest of the world as well. And now, they’re in Malaysia for MTV World Stage Live In Malaysia 2010.
The boys were relaxed as they lounged around on a plush sofa, dressed casually for the tropical weather. Bill was striking as usual, his slender frame clad in a red and black striped top with layered chains adorning his neck and his hair swept up into a perfectly coiffed quiff.
Throughout the interview, Bill was the chatty one, Tom was the cheeky one, Gustav was the attentive one and well, Georg was the sweet one –he smiled a lot. We find out more about what Tokio Hotel have up their sleeve for tonight’s performance, Bill’s septum piercing and the much-missed Jumbie before the boys had to be whisked away for rehearsals.

What can the fans expect from your MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010 appearance?
Tom: The main thing is that we will have the burning piano and something new for “World Behind My Wall.”  We also have a great opening for “Noise” and all our intros.
Bill: What we did on this record is that we tried some new instruments, the guys are playing keyboards, and they are playing piano for the first time, because in general, Tom is only playing the guitar, but he’s also really talented when it comes to the piano, so we went with a new record to try new stuff on stage as well.

Do you guys still get nervous when you’re up on stage?
Bill: Yes, we do. But when you play a tour for like 3 months or something…with the large shows when it’s the same every night, it’s not that bad, you get used to it. We are always nervous when it’s just the one show, just the one possibility, and it’s always exciting. I think it’s a normal thing to be nervous.

Tokio Hotel has recenty released a ‘Humanoid City’ Live DVD and album.  I understand that the stage setting was created by the team behind the blockbuster movie “The Fifth Element.” Tell us more about the creative process behind bringing this tour video to life.
Bill: You know when it comes to the tour, you always have so many ideas and things you want to do, and for us it was important to do something new. We really wanted to create a ‘Humanoid City,’ so we had a great stage designer, her name is Misty Buckley, she did a fantastic job and we worked really close together.
Tom: We all sat down and said we wanted a big opening, we want something movable, we want the set to flow on stage, and all the ideas kept coming.
Bill: So putting a show together like this means a lot of time, we started half a year before we got on the road, and we had some rehearsals in London for like a week. We then did the costumes together, it was Dean and Dan (Caten) from DSquared2, and they also did a fantastic job. It was really a process, so I think the most important thing is to get together and to talk about what you want to have. I really wanted to do something ‘Humanoid,’ something which is not from the planet, and that was the whole theme for the tour. Everything worked really well and we put on quite the show in Milan.

Speaking of the tour and also your album ‘Humanoid,’ there’s this whole science fiction aspect going on, so do you guys have any favorite science fiction movies, books etc?
Bill: I think I love most sci-fi movies in general.
Tom: Sci-fi movies are great, my favorite sci-fi movie is… do we have a favorite? I mean Fifth Element is great…
Georg: District 9.
(All agree)
Bill: 2012 was also a great movie.
Tom: It’s not really sci-fi but…
Bill: I like a lot of different things, I like everything with aliens so yeah. It was not planned to have the record like this, it comes just with the process and we were sitting in the studio thinking and talking about things like that and we came up with the idea of calling this album ‘Humanoid’ and to have all the sci-fi influences.

Bill, you’ve recently got yourself some new piercings-including a septum one that is slightly more unusual. Was it planned or something done on impulse?
Bill: No, it’s always really spontaneous. I was sitting in the car and I had this idea and I said ok, I wanna do it. The great thing about piercings is that you can pull it out any time so that’s really great.
But I’m really into piercings and tattoos and stuff like that so I already planned some new tattoos I wanna have. When you do this, it hurts so bad, and you say ok, I never want to do this again, but when everything is fine and you’re feeling good again then you go directly to the next piercer and it’s a cycle.
I’m kinda addicted to stuff like that.

So is there any part of your body that you will never pierce?
Bill: Yes, my “downstairs” area. (gestures to lower body)
(everyone chuckles)

What’s the most interesting thing that you guys have had to autograph so far?
Tom: We’ve had some good things – used underwear, cars…
Georg: Naked boobs…
Bill: Yep, things like that…
Tom: I prefer naked boobs (smiles widely)
Is Jumbie ever going to make an appearance again?
Bill: Ah!
(everyone laughs)
Tom: He does look really great on film.
Bill: We always have new toys on tour, and this time we have snake boards (skate boards with pivot points). It’s really hard to learn this but once you get it, it’s really fun, but maybe we’ll bring Jumbie on the next tour, or maybe to Asia. I think he definitely wants to see it.
***
So ladies and gentlemen, when the lights come on for Tokio Hotel tonight at MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010, prepare to scream.

LIVE CITY!
Tokio Hotel closed a successful tour and you can win an amazing DVD from the concert!

The Aliens City
You thought your city is boring? Well, it seems like you are right. But no need to feel bad, because there's no city at the same level of "Humanoid City", that comes alive at the amazing tour of Tokio Hotel.

1st September, just a month and a little, will probably be an annoying day (the day the new year of school starts here) but can also be a happy holiday. You decide yourself, if you will want to bury yourself because the summer vacation ended and now you go back to school, or maybe you'll prefer to light a candle and wish a happy birthday to Bill and Tom Kaulitz, because at the same day the twins will celebrate their 21st birthday, absolutely an exciting event. Just remind us to add a picture of the Black Forest Cake, a known German dessert, to our issue of 1st September, that in a cosmic way falls on Wednesday (the day the magazine comes out). Also, if you want to send the brothers some wishes, you are welcome to send them to us and we'll give them straight to their record company, because, as you know, we have great connections with the stars ;-)

Okay, you caught us. Although we mean every word and we are really going to try to give them your wishes, we are also flattering you guys, Tokio Hotel fans, that in the last two months are not really satisfied with us, the best teen magazine in the middle east and probably in the whole world. We admit - Tokio Hotel was neglected a bit here in the last few months. The guilt is mosly about us, but just don't forget that there are reasons - the guys didn't have a new single for more than half a year, we didn't have some juicy news about them since 2009 (when Tom got into a mess with some psychopathic fans that attacked his mom) and although we liked "Strange" a lot from the soundtrack of "Alice In Wonderland", the band kept being pretty calm and gave most of the energy for the European tour, "Humanoid City", that ended not long ago.

Superhuman
Actually, maybe something good really happened out of the tour. No, the guys are not coming back to Tel Aviv to remake their amazing moments from their first and the only performance here (remeber how amazing it was?), but they released last week a new DVD and an album, that shows their unforgettable concert that was at 12th April, this year, in Milan, Italy. At the moment we heard the products are doing their way to Israel, we decided to take care again of our special connection between us and Tokio Hotel, and give them a great cover article. You guys also win from all this, because including with this great article (we are very modest today), you have a one time chance to win copies of the hot DVD and album, so run NOW to page 23. Or maybe after you read the article.

The concert, that was filmed in April, was at the end of the tour of "Humanoid City". To be correct, it was one before the last concert of the tour, when Bill and the friends already felt the end and everything was easy and fun. On the concert, the band is performing all of the songs from the album "Humanoid", including the new single "Darkside of the Sun", that its live version was released as a single in the last month.
On one hand, it's really nice to hear all the songs from the last album in live, but on the other hand they are "replacing" old loved songs. Well, the concert actually includs "Ready, Set, Go" and "Monsoon", bit we'd also be glad to get "Scream" or "Don't Jump", for example. Also, all the songs on the concert are performed in English, except "Humanoid" that got an acoustic version in German.

Give us a ride, Bill
And what happens on the concert except the music? Well, we also were surprised by the impressing stage and the advanced pyrotechnics. Tokio Hotel got some huge fireworks (I don't know how to say that differently, haha) that also worked with the Rolling Stones and Aerosmith, that made their tour unforgettable. All the effort was worth it. The idea of "Humanoid City" is a journy through a futuristic city. The stage is full with lazers and flashing lights and moving bridges and videos that are shown on a huge screen and a space ship that looks like an egg.

In one of the most exciting videos you can see the band members in their "younger times", and Gustav and Tom fighting for a piece of pizza. Wow, very mature. Like they don't have enough money to buy a company of pizzas. Anyway, would you believe that 9 years already passed since Tokio Hotel is a band? (actually under the name Devilish, but okay). And not just this: in one of the most exciting moments of the concert, the stage opens and a huge motorbike comes out of it, that Bill takes an imaginary ride on it. Too bad he doesn't pull a wheelie.

Talking about Bill, we have to mention that he totally healed after his surgery he had two years and half ago. To record an album after a surgery is one thing - because there are always producers and special effects that will fix things in the studio, but a full tour, that you need to go on stage almost everyday and give your soul without playback - it's definitely a different thing. Shortly, there's no need to worry. Bill sounds healthy and better than ever and he totally controled the whole show.

During the concert, the singer changes 4-5 futuristic outfits, that each of them is crazier than the previous one. Tight leather clothes? Yes. Spikes on the shoulders? Yes. Wires that apparently going out of Bill's head and connecting to his back and shining wires that wrap his upper body and look like a part of a space suit? Yes! Until today we thought Bill is a human that was born in Leipzig, Germany, today we are not so sure anymore. Is there a chance that Bill is an alien that was adopted by the Kaulitz family, and that he and Tom are actually not real twins? Good question. If there's any creature on Mars that reads these lines right now and knows the answer - We'll be happy to get an answer. We prefer by e-mails, but also through telepathe is good.

Rehearsals Room
Together with the DVD, comes the most interesting bonus: exclusive video of 10 minutes, that will take you to a trip into the backstage of the show. The guys are actually talking in German, but everything is translated into English, so we are sure you guys will do good with that.
It's amazing to see the first sketches of the stage and its miniature version, that after hard work, sweat and tears became the real thing. "When we saw the set for the first time, we were in doubt that it's possible to build it over and over everyday in a different place", says Bill in the video. "I really have now idea how they do that, respect to them". Then we have Tom that talks about his guitars and Gustav that asks from Bill a bubble gum in chocolate flavor. First pizza and now that?

On the other part of the video, Tom was asked if he'd be interested to change outfits like his brother. "Totally not!", he answers. "Bill needs to change outfits in a minute and I just wouldn't handle it. Anyway, these outfits are heavy and limit the ability to move on stage. I have to be moveable and I don't have time to think about outfits, because many other thoughts are in my head during the show". What kind of thoughts? "to play the right notes and find the prettiest girls in the audience". Hey, at least Tom is a honesy guy, and honesty is one of the things girls are searching in a guy, no?

And lets finish with a message to all Georg's fans! We'd really want to tell you what's new about him, but the guy barely says a word, and most of the time is busy by playing his bass and keyboard. Nevermind, at least he was ranked as the hottest member in Tokio Hotel, after a poll we made, and this is the sign to all Bill's fans to attack our e-mail in angry mails. We are preparing ourselves.

Making Some Noise

Making some noise
Rockers Tokio Hotel happy to pump up the volume
by Christopher Toh 05:55 AM Jul 29, 2010

The last time German rockers Tokio Hotel were in town, they played an acoustic showcase - a far cry from Humanoid City, the ballsy show they've been touring recently. This time round, when Tokio Hotel return to our shores for Singfest, they promise to rock out - albeit on a smaller scale than Humanoid City.

"We will have a full electric show, but we won't be able to bring the whole set for Humanoid City," said Tokio Hotel singer Bill Kaulitz over the phone. "But it's going to be a great show anyway."

What do you expect this time?

We expect great weather. And great audiences. Well, you know, we'd rather see the fans one-to-one than just read about them or hear about them on the Internet. This time we can see them face-to-face and see their reactions and emotions. That's always a great thing. So we're excited.

Did you see much of Singapore and try the local food last time?

The schedule was really, really tough the last time, so we didn't see the whole city and all our fans, but it was fantastic. We just ate pasta, pizza and things like that. Maybe we'll get to try some this time.

Brothers in a band aren't always a good idea. Look at Oasis. How well do you get along with Tom?

I think because we're identical twins, it's a little different. There's a connection there, it's something special. We're like one person - can't live without each other. I mean, we have fights sometimes, but five minutes later, we'll forget about it. Tommy and me, we've done everything together our whole lives. It's an enormous thing for us to be in the same band and doing all this together.

You guys were teens when you started. Any advice for young bands?

It's hard in the beginning, especially if you are very young, with people talking sh** about you. But when you're doing good music at 15 ... that's a good thing. To be successful, though, it's a lot of luck - you have to be at the right place at the right time. And a lot of hard work. We made the decision and we just wanted to go for it and do music our whole lives. We didn't care what happened. It's important to keep that goal in mind to go professional.

So you didn't think to do anything else after school?

Tom and me, we started to make music when we were seven. After school, we went directly into the rehearsal room. There was never a Plan B. If we weren't picked up by the label, I think we could have been homeless musicians, maybe. We would play anywhere - in front of five or in front of thousands. But it's better to play in front of thousands! We are really lucky to have this life. I feel really blessed.

Tokio Hotel perform at Singfest on Aug 3. Tickets at $175 from Sistic. Packages available. Details at www.sistic.com.sg.

Interview: Tokio Hotel can't wait to sing at MTV World Stage 2010 - Malaysia MSN

There's no doubt about it: Tokio Hotel is one of the biggest bands this year and they have their fans to thank them for. That's why the boys kept gushing about you in this exclusive interview.
Tokio Hotel(Courtesy of Universal Music)

You guys put on a terrific show here in Malaysia back in May 2010. What do you miss most about Malaysia?

Bill: When we first came, we were so surprised because everyone was so friendly and we had a warm welcome, so we definitely missed the people and the weather, of course! But on stage, it gets a little too hot and we're not used to it; we were on a European tour and it was cold everywhere. But it was great and we look forward to the show!

What can fans expect from your performance at the MTV World Stage?

B: This time it's going to be bigger: production-wise and special-effects like electric shower. It's going to be really, really cool. We did think about playing naked [laughs]. I wanted to bring my costumes with me from the European tour but I think it will be too hot. Maybe something more casual this time.

It's been two months since we last saw you in May. What have you guys been up to?

B: We were in the studio and we did some promotional tour in Europe. We just launched our new DVD 'Humanoid City Live' and we recorded this at Milano. It's a fantastic live DVD and we had a lot of fun doing this. We also recorded a live album and a new video 'Darkside of The Sun'.

You are set to perform at MTV World Stage with the likes of Katy Perry and Wonder Girls. Who are you most excited to meet?

B: I'm most excited to meet the fans and the crowd. I've never heard about the Wondergirls; they're a completely new band to us. But, the fans are incredible and we're looking forward to our own show and concert.

Tom: For all of us, we're looking forward to our performance and I'm a big fan of Tokio Hotel, so I can't wait to see them live! And they have such a beautiful guitar player! [laughs]

Back in 2008, Katy Perry dedicated her controversial song 'Ur So Gay' to you for beating her to the 'Best New Artiste' Award. Are you flattered?

B: I seriously feel sorry for her that we won! Well, the best band wins [laughs]. And everyone knows we have the best fans in the world!

Tell us more about your fans.

B: They are loyal and they're always there for us. It feels like a whole family on the road; we have some fans who are always at our shows in Europe. We have Tokio Hotel TV and the Internet that we can always check and keep in touch with them.

We understand that Bill and Tom are turning 21 this year. Would you like any presents from your fans?

B: You know, I like diamonds and Ferrari! I like it when fans write us songs and post video messages to us. George will be buying us a Ferrari and a diamond ring!

T: Oh, we have a rule in the band: no presents for nobody as it would be too expensive! We've known each other for ten years and to buy amazing presents for four great people, we thought, we don't want that stress! We just have a great time together. And we party! Let's say George had a party when he's on tour and that was really sweet. Our bus driver arranged for a party in the tour bus! So I gave him a real, warm hug.

Georg: That's what we wish for every year.

We'll give you a hug for the success of 'Humanoid' as well.

B: We are so proud of this record because it's always hard to record the third album as a band. But it was exactly how we wanted; we tried new stuff in the studio and it worked live on stage. Everything's working great, especially the European tour, Malaysia and Asia, and now we're better than ever.

What's next for Tokio Hotel after MTV World Stage 2010?

B: Erm, we are going on a short trip to South America, and after that we go back to Europe to do more promo tours, followed by the studio to write new songs. Hopefully we get a vacation and some time off. It was a long year for us!

Where would you like to go for a vacation?

B: We like small islands. We always go to the Maldives, which is so beautiful. We've been there, I don't know [pauses] it's the most beautiful place in the world. I really like to go somewhere quiet where there is the beach, ocean and nothing else.

Since your band's name is Tokio Hotel, do you have any weird hotel experiences?

B: Yes, we've been to many hotels on our travels and we have a few favourites like the one in Singapore, actually. And we had some bad experience like this hotel in South Africa where we had our video shoot, it was called a hotel but it wasn't a hotel, really. It was like a small bungalow to fit everyone and there was camping involved! It was so ******ing cold in the room and there was no heater! Nothing to eat, no Internet and water too! That was really an experience for us.

What do you guys listen to on your iPod?

B: It's a mixture of Aerosmith to pop stuff; I don't have this one band locked down but most of the time, I listen to this band called Tokio Hotel.

Georg: I really like the new record by 30 Seconds to Mars. I listen to it all the time.

Gustav: I listen to Devilish.

Tokio Hotel Promises an Extraordinary Performance

Even though our conversation went on for less than 15 minutes, it was clear that these four young men from Germany who call themselves Tokio Hotel are very excited about their performance at the MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010 at Surf Beach @ Sunway Lagoon this coming 31 July.

During our brief conversation, the group that consists of Gustav Schafer, Tom and Bill Kaulitz and Georg Listing were repeatedly expressing their happiness that their second trip to Malaysia will definitely be different and much more special for their fans.

“It’s going to be a large-scale performance and different from the previous one. Since we are still quite new to the international stage, we are so grateful to MTV World Stage for giving us the chance to perform at this event.

“What’s more interesting is that MTV World Stage 2010 will be held in Malaysia and that indirectly gives us the opportunity to meet with the fans who appreciate our music,” said the band’s lead singer Bill Kaulitz.

Moving on to their performance on the night of the concert, Bill states that his band will surely put on a show that is prestigious enough for such a monumental event.

Set to deliver their popular hits such as Pain of Love/i[], [i]Human Connect To Human, World Behind My Wall, Noise and Automatic, this band, which was formed in 2005, is expected to come forth with an arrangement and musical composition that is promised to be bigger and fresher, as well as using their own crew and performance production besides a special gimmick on the night of the concert.

“What can we say? The performance that night will be extraordinary and will exceed expectations. Besides a set list that is bigger and more energetic, we will also collaborate with our own crew and stage production for our special performance gimmick.

“Maybe on that night, we will try to enthrall the audience with a fireworks display apart from songs that will definitely entertain. We can’t reveal anything else - the fans just have to come and see for themselves the difference that we’ll perform,” said Bill, who was touched by the sheer response from fans during their maiden visit here last May.

In August 2009, MTV World Stage which was organised for the first time in Malaysia managed to pull in close to 15,000 fans at Sunway Lagoon to watch The All-American Rejects, Kasabian, Pixie Lott, Hoobastank, Boys Like Girls, Raygun and Estranged.

For this year, apart from Tokio Hotel, MTV World Stage 2010 is expected to be more earth-shattering with the presence of US pop sweetheart Katy Perry, Korean band Wonder Girls and local indie band Bunkface. MTV World Stage Live in Malaysia 2010 is happening this 31 July, starting at 6pm, at Surf Beach @ Sunway Lagoon.
