Class acts all set to rock out (Malaysia)

Class acts all set to rock out

THIS year’s MTV World Stage line up consists of four acts, each with their own following of fans who are looking forward to an explosive concert and a rocking good time.

Tokio Hotel

This four-man glam rock band consists of vocalist Bill Kaulitz and his guitarist twin brother Tom as well as bassist Georg Listing and drummer Gustav Schaefer. Their only appearance in Malaysia previously was for a promo show on May 1. Hailing from Germany, the band’s hits such as Automatic and World Behind My Wall from their latest album Humanoid have received plenty of airtime on local radios. Frontman Bill with his cool hairstyles and fine features has a very special place in the hearts of most of the band’s die-hard Malaysian fans. “I want to marry him,” Hong Jia Yu, 15, said and it was a sentiment many of her fellow fans shared.

Katy Perry

This brunette bombshell made it big with her debut single with the very catchy and quite mischievous title of I Kissed A Girl back in 2008 and will be performing for the first time in Malaysia during MTV World Stage. Perry is also known for her funky hair colours and fun outfits. Her most recent single California Gurls featuring rapper Snoop Dogg is in her upcoming album Teenage Dream that is due to be launched in August. She is the fiancee of British comedian Russell Brand. Ask most guys who they’re most looking forward to seeing at the MTV World Stage and it’s more likely than not, the answer will be Perry. The terms usually associated with her are hot, hot and hot!

Wonder Girls

Sun, Yenny, Yubin, Lim and Sohee, who make up Korea’s fast-rising girl band Wonder Girls, will get you hooked on them one way or another. If it isn’t their good looks, it will be their cute dance moves and if all else fails, there is that infectious song Nobody that will make anyone who listens to it have it on repeat in their heads and on their lips. The song was their ticket to instant fame and they are currently on their own US tour concert called Wonder Girls World Tour after a successful tour with the Jonas Brothers last year. They have their share of local fans as well and they’ll certainly gain much more after their debut performance here in Malaysia.

Bunkface

Local band Bunkface is an AIM-award winning band that first came about in 2005 with Sam as the vocalist, Youk the bass guitarist and Paan as the lead guitarist. Their first song Silly Lily was at the top spot of Fly FM’s Campur Chart for 10 weeks in a row and they eventually went on to win three Shout! Awards last year. Their first full album, Phobia Phoney was launched in March this year. Their more well known songs include Bunk Anthem, Situasi, Extravaganza, Prom Queen and Revolusi. It was during this year’s AIM 17 Awards that they won Best Rock Song for Situasi as well as the Anugerah Kembara that is given to musicians who took their music beyond the local scene. As fan Nicholas Gan, 16, said: “They deserve to go international! They’re really good.”
