――TOKIO HOTELはとても若い頃からバンドを始めたけど、その頃からどんな音楽がやりたいか特別なイメージはあったの？
Bill「う～んいや、ないよ。ただ僕らはすぐにダイレクトに自分たちで曲を書き始めて、自分たちの音楽というものを作り上げていったんだ。だから今まで誰かの曲のコピーをやったことはないよ」
――それって、スゴイ!!
Bill「(笑）、だって僕らの音楽の趣味はそれぞれ違うし、それにこれまで僕らのようなバンドはいなかったから、すぐにオリジナルを作るしかなかったんだ（笑）。メンバーみんなが共通して好きなアーティストはいなかったからね」
――今は？
Bill「今はみんなで共通して好きなロックスターはAerosmithだ よ。でもやっぱりプライヴェートで聴く音楽のテイストはみんな違う。いつも質問されるのが、僕たちのヴィジョンについてや、今後どうしたいのか、どうやっ て曲を作っているのかってことなんだけど、それはすごくシンプルなんだ。僕らはただ僕たち全員に”何か”がやって来るのを待つんだ」
――それは自分達が作りたい音楽を見つけるのは簡単ということ？
Bill「ああ、そうだよ！だってバンドを始めたのが早かったから、僕はいつも歌詞のことを考えて、Tomがギターを弾いて・・・」
Tom「曲を書くのは簡単なんだ。いつもやりたい事をみつけるのは簡単で、ただやるだけなんだ」
――どうやって見つけていったの？
Tom「リハーサルルームでただ演奏を始めるだけだよ。Billがエモーショナルなスタイルの歌詞を書き始めて、僕らが楽器をプレイして。歌詞も音楽も全て同時に作っていくんだ」
Geo「前もって何かを準備してやることはないんだよね」
Bill「なかには表現するということで言えば、書くことだったら、物語を書いたり詩を書くことで表現する人もいる。でも僕等はいつも音楽を作ることで自分たちを表現している。僕たちはその表現方法を見つけただけよ」
――歌詞を書くにあたってどんなところからインスピレーションを受けてますか？
Bill「あらゆるところからだね。いろんなところからアイデア を集めて、トムと一緒に家のスタジオで時々レコーディングしながらまとめていくんだ。映画からインスパイアされたり、街で過ごしている時からだったり、自 分とは違う人からだったり、人生からもインスパイアされている。そしてスタジオへ行ってそれらをまとめていくんだけど、そこから新しいアイデアが生まれる こともあれば、全てを変えてしまうこともあるし、そんなふうに曲へ向けてまとめられていくんだ」
